This weekend Tesla Inc. will begin rolling out its new navigation system the company brags will be “light years ahead” of its current platform, which has been faulted for not being updated frequently enough.

The new system has been reprogrammed from the ground up to enable Tesla to make over-the-air updates faster and without having to wait for third-party vendors.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk cautions that the upgraded navigation system is a "mature beta" that won’t be perfect initially. But he says improvements will be made quickly.

Tesla’s electric vehicles are equipped with multiple cameras and other sensors used for driver assistance systems. The carmaker also uses the sensors to collect real-world road data used to update maps.
