Tesla Motors Inc. plans this spring to debut a home energy storage system that combines solar panels and a lithium-ion battery, according to CEO Elon Musk.
He tells analysts the system will go into production in about six months. The technology would enable homeowners and small businesses to operate off-grid at least part time.
Tesla is making larger stationary storage systems at its Model X electric-car factory in Fremont, Calif., Bloomberg News notes. Tesla's chief technology officer tells analysts the company is working with several utilities on battery-based energy storage systems, which can be used for load leveling.
