Electric carmaker Tesla Motors Inc. may tap South Korean battery producer Samsung SDI Co. Ltd. as a second supplier as it tries to add models and volume, according to Reuters.
Both Tesla and Samsung SDI confirm they are in talks. But they say no deal has been finalized, and Tesla notes that it is in discussions with other battery suppliers too. The company's primary battery supplier is Panasonic Corp.
Tesla aims to sell about 21,000 of its $69,900 Model S sedans this year. Sources tell the news agency that the pending contract with Samsung SDI would provide battery technology for the Model X, a lower-priced crossover that Tesla is expected to add to its lineup next year. Samsung also would provide power cells for a small sedan due in 2017.
