Tesla Motors Inc. used its website on Thursday to confirm it will introduce a new ride services program called Tesla Network in 2017. CEO Elon Musk first mentioned the idea in July while describing his “master plan, part deux” for the electric car company.

The service appears to be linked to the company’s plan to equip all its EVs from now on with enough sensors and cameras to operate in a fully autonomous mode. But Tesla says it will take many months of gradual software updates to enable automated driving under all conditions. The company plans to charge customers $8,000 to fully activate the system.

“Using a self-driving Tesla for car sharing and ride-hailing for friends and family is fine,” the Tesla post says. "But doing so for revenue purposed will only be permissible on the Tesla Network.”

In outlining his vision for the company four months ago, Musk described a future in which Tesla owners would be able to generate income for themselves by using a smartphone app to loan out their vehicles.
