Japan’s Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd. says it has developed a vehicle-to-infrastructure communication system that alerts motorists about the presence of pedestrians on streets they are turning onto.

Mounted like a traffic light at the corner of a road, a wireless 24 GHz-band millimeter-wave radar unit tracks pedestrian movement near crosswalks. Approaching vehicles can be altered audibly and visually with roadside screens or in-vehicle displays.

Sumitomo is testing the technology with five police departments in Japan.
