Sumitomo to Produce Sodium-Ion EV Batteries

Next spring Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd. will begin making sample batches of sodium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and other markets at its factory in Osaka, Japan, Nikkei Asian Review reports.
Each device, which measure about 4x6x2 inches, has capacity of 125 watt-hours, according to the report.
Sodium-ion batteries are attractive because their materials are easier to find than the ingredients required for lithium-ion chemistries. Conventional sodium-ion batteries need temperatures of at least 57°C (135°F) to operate, but Sumitomo Electric says its design works at 20°C (68°F).
The company plans to eventually sell the new batteries for 100,000-200,000 yen ($980-$2,000) per kilowatt-hour, or about the current price of lithium-ion units, NAR says.
