The 2014 Subaru Forester crossover is the first vehicle to earn a top score in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's new "small overlap" crash test.
IIHS added the test, which is not required by federal safety standards, last year to determine what happens when the left front 25% of a vehicle strikes a rigid wall at 40 mph.
The test, which is considerably harsher than the full-width frontal crash used by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, is intended to simulate the impact of hitting a pole or the edge of an oncoming car. The NHTSA said in January it may add a similar test to its portfolio.
