South Korea Plans Test City for Autonomous Vehicles

The South Korean government is investing 11 billion won ($9.7 million) to build an 88-acre testing complex for autonomous vehicles.
The first phase of the center, which is Dubbed K-City, is scheduled to open in October. The facility will include replica city centers, expressways, parking lots, bus lanes and other features to simulate real world driving conditions.
Several Korea-based companies have committed to use the facility, including Hyundai Motor Co.—along with its Kia Motors Corp. affiliate—and Samsung Electronics Co. All three companies and 15 others have received permission to test autonomous vehicles on public roads in South Korea.
The South Korea project is similar to the 32-acre Mcity testing center in Ann Arbor, Mich. Michigan also is building a massive 332-acre center for autonomous vehicles on the site of a former General Motors Co. plant in nearby Ypsilanti Township.
