Electric vehicle startup SF Motors Inc. has begun testing building-block technologies for self-driving cars on public roads in California and Michigan.
The 2-year-old company, which has revealed nothing about its vehicles, intends to unveil its first EV on March 28 at its headquarters in Santa Clara, Calif., Automotive News reports. Its autonomous-car tests are being conducted with retrofitted cars acquired from other carmakers.
SF Motors says its work on autonomous driving systems currently focuses on driver-assist features, which it calls “protective” autonomy. The company says it will introduce such features gradually as it works its way toward more comprehensive self-driving systems.
Last November SF Motors bought a manufacturing facility in Indiana from AM General LLC. At the time it said it intends to launch production of electric cars there in 2019. The company is backed by China’s Chongqing Sokon Industry Group.
