SAIC Tests Autonomous Shuttle in California

China’s Shanghai Automotive Industrial Corp. is testing an automated, all-electric shuttle bus in Davis, Calif., in conjunction with the University of California-Davis.

China’s Shanghai Automotive Industrial Corp. is testing an automated, all-electric shuttle bus in Davis, Calif., in conjunction with the University of California-Davis.

The six-passenger shuttle will operate during daylight hours along a 1.3-mile route at speeds no greater than 25 mph. A backup driver will be aboard to take control if necessary.
 

Initially, the shuttle will transport SAIC personnel. The tests are likely to expand later to allow other riders.

SAIC’s Innovation Center in Silicon Valley designed and built the self-driving shuttle. The carmaker also is testing autonomous vehicles on public roads in Shanghai.

SAIC and the UC-Davis Institute of Transportation Studies will monitor the tests to evaluate the autonomous driving systems and how consumers interact with the technology. University researchers also will study how such shuttles affect ride-sharing and other new mobility services.
