BMW AG’s Rolls-Royce unit says it is moving forward with an all-aluminum chassis that will carry all its models within two years, including the next-generation Phantom ultra-luxury sedan due to launch in early 2018.

The company announced it was developing the lightweight platform last year. And a report in Automobile detailed plans for the eighth-generation Phantom.

Rolls-Royce will stop producing the current Phantom, which was launched in 2003, at the end of 2016. As part of the changeover to the new aluminum platform, Rolls-Royce confirms it will discontinue the coupe and convertible versions of the Phantom due to slumping demand. These models will be phased out this year with a collectors’ edition of 50 Phantom Zenith coupe/convertibles. The special cars will get laser-etched armrest drawings, customized instrument panels and a unique tailgate with seats for country picnics.

The new aluminum chassis also will carry the company's previously announced crossover/SUV. That vehicle is expected to launch next year.

The carmaker also produces the Dawn convertible, Wraith coupe and Ghost sedan. Rolls-Royce sales dipped nearly 7% last year to fewer than 3,800 vehicles as its deliveries in China plunged 54%.
