More business travelers in the U.S. around using ride-hailing services instead of rental cars, according to Certify LLC, a North American provider of travel and management software.
The Portland, Maine-based company says its analysis of expense receipts shows that ride-hailing service providers Uber Technologies and Lyft Inc. accounted for 46% of reported business ground travel in January-March. Rental cars provided 40%, and taxis delivered the remaining 14%.
Ride-hailing services surpassed rental cars in the fourth quarter of 2015 and are rapidly extending their lead, according to Certify. It says Uber alone accounted for 43% of ground transportation trips in the first quarter of 2016. Lyft, whose usage has surged 44% in the past year, provided about 3% of such trips.
The ability to hail a ride with a smartphone app and pay for the ride the same way is a major convenience for business travelers, Certify asserts. It says the option is a big cost-saver for employers too.
