Volkswagen AG used a top-secret research facility at its headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany, to test illegal software developed to cheat on diesel emission tests, sources tell Bloomberg News.
Bloomberg says the lab, which had highly restricted access between at least 2006 and 2008, was a short distance from the company’s main executive offices. The cheater diesels were used in vehicles beginning with the 2009 model year.
VW declined to comment. The company has maintained that the cheating was conducted by a group of about 40 rogue engineers and that top-level management was unaware of the activity.
But Bloomberg’s sources say the existence of a dedicated test site for the cheating illustrates the lengths taken by those involved to conceal their actions. The news service adds that the revelation also raises new questions about management’s knowledge of the affair.
