Toyota Motor Corp. is considering erecting a new assembly plant in Tianjin, China, Kyodo News reports. The facility would boost Toyota's annual capacity in China to more than 1 million vehicles from 920,000 units now, the news service says.

Any new plant would require the approval of the Chinese government.

The company already has a joint venture car plant in Tianjin with partner FAW Group Corp. Toyota also operates joint venture assembly plants in Chengdu with FAW and Guangzhou with Guangzhou Automobile Group Co.

Toyota and its partners sold 372,000 vehicles in the first five months of this year, up 26% from the same period of 2011.
