Chinese social media giant Tencent Holdings Ltd. is the latest company to develop its own technology platform with which to operate autonomous vehicles, sources tell Bloomberg News.
Tencent is tapping its mapping and artificial intelligence work to create the operating system, according to Bloomberg. Its sources say the Shenzhen-based media giant has already built a prototype and is testing the software now.
The company said in March it intended to apply its AI expertise to the emerging self-driving-car market. Bloomberg notes the strategy will pit Tencent against China’s Baidu Inc., which says its system will debut a robotic bus next year and semi-autonomous cars in 2019.
Tencent acquired 5% of Tesla Inc. in March. It also is a major investor in Chinese ride-sharing provider Didi Chuxing and mapping company NavInfo Co. Ltd.
