Renault-Nissan Expands Capacity in India
Alliance partners Nissan Motor Co. and Renault SA plan to boost annual capacity at their assembly plant in Chennai, India, by one-third to 480,000 vehicles by September, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Alliance partners Nissan Motor Co. and Renault SA plan to boost annual capacity at their assembly plant in Chennai, India, by one-third to 480,000 vehicles by September, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Toshihiko Sano, CEO of Renault Nissan Automotive India, tells the newspaper the factory site has space to build a second facility that could produce an additional 400,000 vehicles per year, if needed.
The Journal notes that Nissan is preparing to introduce the first model of its revived Datsun brand in India early next year. The company aims to sell the ultra-low-priced brand in several emerging markets.
Current output of the Chennai plant, which is the partners' first joint factory, includes the Nissan Micra supermini and Sunny compact car and the Renault Duster SUV, Pulse small car and Scala midsize car. Nissan exported 99,000 cars from India in the fiscal year ended March 31. Renault shipped out 650 SUVs.
