Renault SA aims to launch 21 new vehicles by 2022, most of which will be electrified and/or have at least SAE Level 2 autonomy capability.
The product offensive was announced Friday as part of Renault’s “Drive the Future” initiative. Under the program, Renault aims to increase annual global sales to more than 5 million units from last year’s tally of about 3.5 million. The company says it will spend €18 billion ($21 billion) on research and development during this time.
Of the 21 new vehicles, 12 will have some sort of electrification—including eight all-electric models. The electrification effort will range from B- to D-segment vehicles built on a dedicated platform shared with Renault’s Nissan and Mitsubishi alliance partners.
In addition, 15 of the vehicles will have features that allow for Level 2 to Level 4 autonomous driving, according to the carmaker. By 2022 all new vehicles Renault sells in its main markets will be equipped with some sort of telematics connectivity capability.
Among the first new products will be the next-generation Clio small car. Due in 2019, the Clio will have a hybrid-electric powertrain and Level 2 autonomy. The current Clio was introduced in 2012.
As it introduces new electrified vehicles, Renault also plans to cut its diesel-powered car lineup in half by 2022. It will offer only one family of diesel engines in the future compared with three today.
