Qualcomm Inc. is investing an unspecified amount in Amionx Inc., a Carlsbad, Calif.-based developer of battery safety technologies.
As part of the deal, Qualcomm President Derek Aberle will join Amionx’s board of directors. Qualcomm expects to apply Amionx’s technology, which has been used by the U.S. Dept. of Defense for more than 10 years, to lithium-ion battery applications across a variety of industries.
Amionx was formed as a spinoff from American Lithium Energy in 2006, The company’s patented Safe Core technology acts as a circuit-breaker to prevent batteries from exploding or sparking a fire. The system is activated to counteract overcharging, an internal short or excessive heat.
Amionx says it is in the process of licensing the technology for use in lithium-ion batteries globally. The concept also is applicable to other battery chemistries, according to the company.
