PSA Peugeot Citroen says it intends to being building small piston-powered cars equipped with an auxiliary unit that enables them to run for short distances on compressed air.
The company expects to begin producing B-segment vehicles with the front-wheel-drive system, dubbed Hybrid Air, in 2016. PSA says the powertrain can be readily adapted for light commercial vehicles and B- and C-segment cars worldwide.
The new system combines a three-cylinder gasoline engine, automatic transmission and hydraulic motor and pump. PSA says a Hybrid Air-equipped car can run on compressed air alone for as much as 80% of its city driving.
A prototype subcompact car fitted with the system emitted only 72 g/km of carbon dioxide on the European test cycle compared with 104 g/km for a comparable vehicle using piston power alone, according to the company.
