German prosecutors in the state of Lower Saxony are now investigating 21 current and former Volkswagen AG employees about their possible role in the company’s diesel engine emission cheating scandal, Handelsblatt reports.

In March, the prosecutors said they were investigating 17 people. None of the new suspects is a current or past member of VW’s management board, according to investigators.

The probe triggered a new round of searches of offices and private residences in Lower Saxony, where VW’s headquarters is located, Handelsblatt says.
