Volvo Car Corp.’s new Polestar unit says its first model, the Polestar 1 hybrid coupe, will be base priced at $155,000 in the U.S.
The carmaker began taking refundable $2,500 deposits for the car last month. Vehicle production is due to start in mid-2019 at a new plant in Chengdu, China.
Polestar also is planning to market vehicles to customers through a subscription plan. Details of the scheme haven’t been disclosed, but it is expected to include two- and three-year options that bundle car payments, financing, insurance and maintenance costs into a single monthly payment.
The rear-wheel-drive Polestar 1 will have an estimated all-electric range of 93 miles on the European driving cycle, which the carmaker says is best-in-class for a hybrid car. The coupe’s hybrid architecture teams two electric motors and a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine to generate a combined 600 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque.
The Polestar 1 will be followed by a pair of all-electric vehicles. The Polestar 2 midsize sedan will launch later in 2019, to be followed by the Polestar 3 large crossover/SUV.
