General Motors Co.'s Opel unit says it will move production of its Zafira MPV from the factory in Bochum, Germany, that is slated to close next year to its underutilized assembly plant in Russelsheim, Germany.

The Russelsheim facility will make the current-generation Zafira for two years until the next-generation model arrives in 2017.

Opel originally planned to shutter the Bochum plant in at the end of the existing model's lifecycle. But the company accelerated the closing after hourly workers there rejected a new concessionary contract.
