NXP Semiconductors NV is launching an integrated microcontroller/microprocessor (MCU/MPU) platform that promises to provide as much as a tenfold performance boost and reduce development times for connected, electric and autonomous cars.
The platform is organized around domain controllers. This includes application-specific systems and customized hardware support for powertrain, driver-assist sensors, electric motors, interior/infotainment and other vehicle systems.
NXP, which was purchased a year ago by San Diego-based Qualcomm Technologies, is the largest semiconductor supplier in the auto industry. The company tapped its expertise in "financial-grade security" for bank cards and smart passports to help develop the S32 platform.
Applications for production vehicles are expected to start soon.
