NXP Semiconductors NV is launching an integrated microcontroller/microprocessor (MCU/MPU) platform that promises to provide as much as a tenfold performance boost and reduce development times for connected, electric and autonomous cars.

Describing the architecture as the first fully scalable automotive computing architecture, the chipmaker claims the new S32 platform is the highest performing MCU in the industry. The system is designed for use across vehicle platforms, thereby enabling developers to reuse research and development to help cut costs and speed time to market for advanced driver-assist systems.

The platform is organized around domain controllers. This includes application-specific systems and customized hardware support for powertrain, driver-assist sensors, electric motors, interior/infotainment and other vehicle systems.

NXP, which was purchased a year ago by San Diego-based Qualcomm Technologies, is the largest semiconductor supplier in the auto industry. The company tapped its expertise in "financial-grade security" for bank cards and smart passports to help develop the S32 platform.

Applications for production vehicles are expected to start soon.
