Atlanta-based Novelis Inc. has begun production on a third automotive finishing line at its Oswego, N.Y., plant.
The new line initially will produce sheet aluminum for the body and cargo box of Ford Motor Co.’s 2017 Super Duty pickup. The Oswego facility already supplies Ford’s aluminum-bodied F-150 pickup.
Novelis invested $120 million in the new line, increasing its total investment at the plant to $550 million over the last five years. It also is adding 100 jobs to increase the facility’s staff to 1,100 workers.
Novelis says it has content in 180 cars and trucks worldwide. In addition to the high-volume Ford applications, Novelis also supplies the aluminum for the body of General Motors Co.’s new Cadillac CT6 sedan.
The automotive sector now accounts for 15% of Novelis’ business, up from 6% in 2012. The company expects the ratio to increase to 25% in coming years.
