Nissan Motor Co. says its next-generation Leaf electric car that launches this autumn will have an integrated e-Pedal system that allows drivers to control vehicle speed and come to a complete stop in most situations with a single foot pedal.
Drivers can use the system, which is activated via a dashboard switch, on its own without touching the brake pedal in 90% of their driving, according to the carmaker. This includes hilly terrain and stop-and-go city driving, Nissan says. The car's conventional brake pedal is needed only for aggressive braking situations.
A few other electric vehicles—such as the BMW i3, Hyundai Ioniq Electric and Volkswagen e-Golf—use high levels of regenerative braking to allow for one-pedal driving in some situations. But Nissan says the ePedal is the only system that can bring a vehicle to a complete stop by completely stepping off the accelerator.
