Nissan Motor Co. is set to open an assembly facility in Myanmar by year-end, The Nikkei reports.

The facility will be a joint venture with Malaysia's Tan Chong Motor Holdings Bhd, through which Nissan began selling imported vehicles in Myanmar in July, according to the newspaper. It says the carmaker is expected to produce several thousand vehicles, including small cars and pickup trucks, per year.

Nissan joins three other carmakers China's Chery Automotive, Japan's Suzuki Motor and India's Tata Motors which already assemble vehicles in small volumes in the southeast Asian country.

The Nikkei notes that the Myanmar car market has been growing quickly since the country began moving toward a democratic government two years ago. The newspaper says fewer than 4% of Myanmar's 63 million inhabitants currently own cars.
