Nissan Motor Co. says the powertrain options for its next-generation Titan fullsize pickup will include a new 5.0-liter diesel from Cummins Inc.
Nissan says the new engine is in the final test stage, suggesting the powerplant and the redesigned Titan will debut about a year from now. Like the current truck, the new Titan will be produced at Nissan's factory in Canton, Miss.
The V-8 diesel is expected to give the Titan more power and better fuel economy than versions equipped with the truck's current standard engine: a 5.6-liter, 317-hp V-8 gasoline engine, which produces 385 lb-ft of torque.
Cummins also supplies 6.7-liter inline-6 diesels to Chrysler Group LLC for use in heavy-duty versions of that carmaker's Ram pickup trucks. This autumn Ram will add a 3.0-liter, 240-hp V-6 diesel from Italy's VM Motori SpA. The same engine debuted this summer in the U.S. as an option in the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV.
