Volkswagen AG’s Audi unit says its new SQ7 TDI model is the most powerful diesel-fueled SUV in the world.

The vehicle’s new twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 diesel generates 435 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. The latter is available at engine speeds as low as 1,000 rpm.

Mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission, the new engine powers the SQ7 from zero to 62 mph in 4.8 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

Audi says turbo lag is virtually eliminated, thanks to what it claims is an industry-first electric-powered compressor. Driven by an electric motor, the new compressor wheel spins as high as 70,000 rpm for faster response at low engine speeds. The SQ7’s 7-kW system is powered by a 48-volt electrical subsystem that includes a 48-volt lithium-ion battery packaged under the trunk.

The 8-speed tiptronic transmission was redesigned for the SQ7 to allow for faster and more efficient gear shifts, according to Audi. In addition, the SUV’s permanent all-wheel drive system is paired with a self-locking central differential. The vehicle’s fuel efficiency is rated at 32 mpg on the European driving cycle, with carbon dioxide emissions of 194 g/km.

Audi says the SQ7 will be the lightest vehicle in its segment and boasts a drag coefficient of 0.34. A driving dynamics package with a sport differential, electromechanical active roll stabilization and all-wheel steering is optional.

Sales are to launch this spring in Germany. The car will offer both five- and seven-seat layouts.
