Dutch prosecutors are pursuing evidence that certain diesel SUVs made by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and Suzuki Motor Corp. use software to evade emission laws.
The Dutch Vehicle Authority (RDW) says nitrogen oxide emissions levels from Jeep Cherokee and Suzuki Vitara SUVs are unacceptably high in real-world road tests. The agency notes the problem was not found in tests of diesels made by 14 other carmakers.
Both companies have proposed software fixes, according to RDW. The agency says this is the first time it has ordered a manufacturer to remedy an emission problem.
The issue involves software that is allowed by European regulators to protect diesels from damage under certain conditions. Officials deem the software “impermissible” when it allows NOx emissions to stray significantly beyond any reasonable level required to prevent harm to the engine.
