Last year the global market for advanced batteries totaled about 47.4 gigawatt-hours of capacity, according to Navigant Consulting Inc. Of that total, some 5 GWh of capacity shipped to the auto industry for use in electric and hybrid vehicles.

Navigant's Advanced Battery Tracker report says more than 99% of the cells shipped in 2013 were lithium-ion chemistries. Consumer electronics dominate the battery market, accounting for 87% of the total.

Last year's global market represented more than 6 billion battery cells, 47 GW of power capacity and $13 billion in sales, according to the report. The latter two numbers compare with 44 GWh and about $12.7 billion in sales in 2012.
