Daimler AG’s Moovel Group GmbH is launching a microtransit ride-sharing service in Stuttgart, Germany, that will use a fleet of Mercedes-Benz Viano (V-Class) light commercial vans.

Moovel is partnering with public transportation specialist Stuttgarter Strassenbahnen AG on the new service. A fare-free pilot program called Flex Pilot starts this week, with a goal of launching the regular SSB Flex service by early next summer.

Users can book and will eventually pay for rides using a smartphone app. Customers will be picked up from pre-set stops within walking distances of their booking location.

Similar trip requests are grouped together by Moovel’s on-demand algorithm so that several passengers end up sharing a vehicle. Routes are continually recalculated and updated during a trip using real-time traffic data and information from the public transport network.

Predictive algorithms are used to calculate demand patterns to schedule fleet usage. The Flex Pilot program will use 10 V-Class vans to provide service within a 12 square-mile area.
