Mitsubishi Unveils Japan’s Most Fuel-Efficient Car

Mitsubishi Motor Corp. says its new Mirage global small car is rated at 64 mpg on Japan's test cycle, making it the country's most fuel-efficient gasoline-powered car. The car goes on sale in Japan at the end of August.
The Mirage is powered by MMC's new 1.0-liter, three-cylinder 68-hp engine with variable valve timing. Power flows to the front wheels through MMC's INVECS-III continuously variable transmission with lockup clutches to enhance efficiency. The powertrain also is fitted with an automatic stop-start system.
Other fuel-saving features include electric power steering, low-rolling-resistance tires, improved aerodynamics and lower body weight.
The company notes that the little sedan will qualify as an "eco-car" in Japan and thus be exempt from sales and motor vehicle taxes. The car has a starting price of $12,700. MMC says it hopes to sell 30,000 Mirages in the fiscal year that ends March 31.
