Mitsubishi Motors Corp. is giving the plug-in hybrid variant of its Outlander SUV a mid-cycle freshening that includes an upgraded battery and powertrain.
The 2019 model will replace the current 2.0-liter Otto cycle engine with a 2.4-liter Atkinson cycle unit. The new 4-cylinder mill will provide more torque, improved efficiency (thanks to the Atkinson valve design) and smoother operation, the carmaker claims.
The outputs of the electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack have been increased by 10%, Mitsubishi says. Battery capacity is up 15%, which should extend the 22-mile electric driving range of the current Outlander PHEV.
The new model also adds two more driving modes (Sport and Snow) to the current Normal and 4WD Lock operations.
Exterior changes include a new front grille, updated LED headlights, rectangular fog light bezels, a more prominent front skid plate and a larger rear spoiler. Mitsubishi says the interior will feature a quilted leather upholstery, contoured front seats, revised switchgear, a new instrument panel and updated trim.
