Mitsubishi Motors Slashes Domestic Output 26%

Mitsubishi Motors Corp. plans to reduce production at its Mizushima assembly plant in Japan 350,000 vehicles this year from 550,000, The Nikkei reports, without citing sources.
The company intends to consolidate four lines at the Mizushima factory in Okayama Prefecture into two this year, according to the Tokyo-based newspaper. It says that consolidation will shrink the combined annual output at MMC's three domestic assembly facilities by 26% to 750,000 vehicles this year.
As a result, the company's capacity utilization in Japan will rise to about 70% from less than 50% in the fiscal year ended March 31, The Nikkei says.
Until now, MMC has made its production cuts outside Japan. It ended manufacturing operations in Australia in 2008 and in Europe last year. But sluggish demand in Europe and Japan left the company's Mizushima factory operating at less than 40% of capacity in the 2012-2013 fiscal year, according to the newspaper.
