The state of Missouri has followed 16 others in filing lawsuits against Volkswagen AG for violating state environmental laws, Reuters reports.
The state complaints seek penalties separate from the tentative $15.3 billion settlement VW reached in June with the U.S. Dept. of Justice, Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board. That deal covers 475,000 vehicles equipped with 4-cylinder diesels that were rigged to elude air pollution laws.
Not yet resolved is a federal settlement that covers an additional 85,000 luxury VW Group vehicles fitted with 6-cylinder diesel engines also deemed by regulators to have been rigged to cheat on U.S. emission tests.
VW previously agreed to begin talks not later than Nov. 1 with at least five states that have filed complaints against the company.
