The state of Michigan and the North American International Auto Show will stage demonstrations of innovative mobility options and “smart” infrastructure during next year’s auto show in June.

Called the NAIAS 2020 Michigan Mobility Challenge, the initiative will involve real-world demonstrations of advanced transportation technologies between Detroit’s City Airport, downtown restaurants and the auto show at Detroit’s Cobo Center.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced the program on Wednesday during the Detroit Regional Chamber’s annual Mackinac Policy Conference in upper Michigan.

The Mobility Challenge will involve tech developers, universities and others, according to organizers. The project is being led by the Michigan Dept. of Transportation and PlanetM. The latter is a statewide initiative of the Michigan Economic Development Corp. to tout Michigan’s overall expertise in the creation and production of next-generation approaches to personal transportation.

Organizers plan to hold a workshop a few weeks from now to detail the Mobility Challenge and explain to potential entrants how to apply for funding when a request for proposals is released in mid-June.
