Mazda Motor Corp. and its joint venture partner Sollers OJSC plan to invest 25 billion yen ($318 million) to double the annual capacity of their new assembly plant in Vladivostok, Russia, to 100,000 vehicles at an unspecified future date.

The factory, the 50:50 venture's first facility, will begin making Mazda CX5 crossover vehicles next month and Mazda6 midsize sedans next spring. The partnership, Mazda Sollers Manufacturing Rus, says capacity will double a year after the plant reaches its initial capacity.

The Russian venture is part of Mazda's strategy to expand its presence in emerging markets.
