Mazda Motor Corp. is expected to introduce a diesel hybrid car in Japan and Europe as early as April 2016, according to The Yomiuri Shimbun.
The newspaper, which cites no sources, offers few details but says Mazda's system targets fuel economy of about 40 km per liter (90 mpg). The report notes that Japan's most fuel-efficient hybrid today is Toyota Motor Corp.'s Aqua model at 37 km/liter (87 mpg).
Mazda's diesel will provide the vehicle's primary propulsion power and recharge batteries used to drive a smaller electric motor, according to the newspaper.
