Mazda Motor Corp. will take the wraps off its first electric vehicle at next month’s Tokyo auto show.

The EV, which is due to be introduced in China, Europe and Japan next year, will be a stand-alone model that rides on a new platform designed to support electrified powertrains. A compact crossover body style is expected.
Prototypes of the vehicle feature an electric motor that generates 141 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. The car’s 35.5-kWh lithium-ion battery provides a range of about 200 km (124 miles) on the Japanese driving cycle, according to media reports.
A range-extended variant with a generator powered by a small rotary engine also is said to be in the works. Such a vehicle likely would target North America, where customers demand longer ranges.
Mazda is developing both iterations under an internal program that began before the company partnered with Toyota and Denso to collaborate on connected and electric-vehicle technologies
