Marvell Launches Integrated Communications Chip
Santa Clara, Calif-based Marvell Semiconductor Inc. is introducing what it describes as the world’s first system-on-a-chip that integrates wi-fi, Bluetooth, vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications capabilities.
Santa Clara, Calif-based Marvell Semiconductor Inc. is introducing what it describes as the world’s first system-on-a-chip that integrates wi-fi, Bluetooth, vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications capabilities.
The fourth-generation 88W8987xA wireless combo chip is the first to support the Bluetooth 5 protocol and dedicated-short-range communication requirements, which Marvell says will enable simplified and less expensive integration between in-vehicle systems and connected devices such as smartphones and wearables. Other purported benefits include improved performance and reliability.
The chip complements Marvell’s Ethernet transceiver. Introduced in late 2015, the transceiver enables the transport of uncompressed video camera imaging, multiple high-definition video streams and high-speed data transfer for autonomous and connected vehicle functions.
