New Delhi-based Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. has slashed production of diesel engines to 200,000 units from 300,000 by canceling one of three shifts at its factory in Manesar, India, The Wall Street Journal reports.
The newspaper cited an unidentified Maruti executive, who didn't say whether the company also cut vehicle production.
Automakers in India expanded diesel engine output in recent years because demand for diesel-powered vehicles soared when the fuel became much cheaper than gasoline.
Maruti says that price differential has narrowed in the last several months, thus dampening demand for diesel models, which are usually more expensive than their gasoline-powered counterparts. India's car market slump has added to the glut of vehicles equipped with diesel engines.
