Martinrea to Shut Ontario Plant in Wake of GM Closure

Canada’s Martinrea International Inc. will be forced to close its plant in Ajax, Ont., when General Motors Co. shutters its nearby Oshawa Assembly facility at the end of 2019, Martinrea Chairman Rob Wildeboer tells the Globe and Mail.
Earlier this week GM announced plans to close Oshawa and four U.S. facilities as part of a new cost-cutting initiative. Martinrea’s Ajax plant supplies suspension modules and engine cradles for the Cadillac XTS and Chevrolet Impala sedans built in Oshawa.
The 77 people working at the Ajax factory will be transferred to other Martinrea sites, according to Wildeboer. He says Oshawa accounts for only 1% of Martinrea’s global sales.
