Self-driving cars could hit the road in the U.S. in five years, says Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV CEO Sergio Marchionne.
He says FCA’s new alliance with Google Inc. has convinced him the necessary technology is more developed than he thought. He also touts the value in partnering with multiple outsiders on autonomous-driving technology during the early phases of development.
“Making unequivocal bets and precluding development with others is a very dangerous path,” he opines to reporters.
Marchionne didn’t clarify what he means by “self-driving” The term is frequently used to describe the ability of a vehicle to automatically navigate many but not all roadways under many but not all situations.
