Contract vehicle assembler Magna Steyr confirms it may open a second factory in Europe if its main plant in Graz, Austria, becomes overloaded with new projects.
The company is a unit of Canada's Magna International Inc. Guenther Apfalter, who directs European operations for Magna Steyr, tells Germany's Automobil Produktion a second facility would be located near the Graz complex.
Magna Steyr currently assembles the boxy Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV for Daimler and the Mini Countryman mini-wagon for BMW. The company will add BMW 5 Series sedans in March and begin building Jaguar Land Rover’s all-electric I-Pace sporty crossover vehicle by about the end of 2017.
Earlier media reports speculated that Magna Steyr might open a plant in Slovenia. Apfalter says the company also is pondering new facilities in North America and China. He indicates a decision about a new European facility will be made by early next year.
