Magna International Inc. is teaming up with Japanese chipmaker Renesas Electronics Corp. on a 3D surround view camera system designed to assist motorists in parking and low-speed driving maneuvers.

The system teams Magna’s camera technology with Renesas’ low-power system-on-a-chip processor. The 3D camera provides a realistic 360° view of a vehicle’s surroundings, which the partners say is a significant upgrade over current bird’s-eye view parking assist systems.

The system is aimed at entry-level and mid-range vehicles. An unnamed European carmaker plans to use the system in a future vehicle, and several other carmakers have expressed interest in the technology, according to the partners.
