Contract assembler Magna Steyr has opened a $1.4 billion paint shop in Slovenia to support its assembly plant in Graz, Austria.
The two facilities are about 75 km (47 miles) apart. The new paint facility is ramping up with a staff of 200 and will double that number as the facility approaches capacity, Automotive News reports.
The Slovenian government, which provided €19 million ($21 million) in incentives, describes the project as the largest greenfield investment in the country’s history.
Magna Steyr announced plans for the paint shop more than two years ago and began pilot operations there in March. The Graz assembly plant currently makes cars for BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota.
