Menlo Park, Calif.-based electric vehicle startup Lucid Motors Inc. says South Korea’s Samsung SDI Co. will be a “major” supplier of lithium-ion batteries for the EV the carmaker plans to launch in 2018.
The companies worked together to develop a next-generation cylindrical cell chemistry that they claim surpasses current performance benchmarks for energy density, power, longevity and safety. Also touted: a breakthrough tolerance to repeated fast charging.
Lucid was formed in 2007 as Atieva Inc. by former Tesla and Oracle employees to develop EV batteries. The company, which changed its name in October, says it has more than 50 patents in the U.S.
Lucid's car will be powered by an 87-kWh lithium-ion battery pack and have an estimated driving range of about 300 miles. The company’s ambitious plans include building a $700 million factory in Casa Grande, Ariz.
