London intends to turn the entire city into an ultra-low-emissions zone by October 2021.
London will implement its first ultra-low-emission zone, which will cover about 6% of the city, next April. The plan will charge drivers of non-compliant passenger vehicles £12.50 ($16.75) per day to operate their cars in central London. The levy will expand to include buses and commercial trucks in 2020.
Mayor Sadiq Khan notes that London has exceeded European Union air quality standards—mainly in the form of excessive nitrogen oxides emitted by diesels—for eight years. Expanding next year’s zone to encompass all of London is projected to lower transport-related air pollution by 28%.
