Tata Motors Ltd.'s Land Rover brand will introduce a new diesel hybrid powertrain for its Range Rover SUVs at the Frankfurt auto show next month, Automotive News reports.
The marque tells AN the system will be available early next year in Australia, China, Europe, South Korea and Taiwan. There are no plans to offer the option in North America.
The hybrid powertrain will consist of a 3.0-liter V-6 diesel, 35-kW electric motor and a lithium-ion battery that delivers more than 340 hp through a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. The optional powertrain will be offered in the company's Range Rover and Range Rover Sport SUVs.
Land Rover says it opted for a more expensive diesel engine rather than a gasoline unit to obtain maximum fuel economy. The powertrain is 26% more fuel efficient than the standard gasoline system, delivering 37 mpg (6.4 liters/100 km) on the European test cycle, according to the company.
