A federal judge in San Francisco has barred the head of Uber Technologies’ autonomous car program from working on key laser sensor technology for the ride-hailing service’s autonomous car program.

Judge William Alsup issued the ruling because of “compelling” evidence that Anthony Levandowski stole thousands of proprietary documents about the so-called lidar devices from his former employer, Alphabet Inc.’s Waymo unit. He also wrote that “at least some information” from the files have “seeped into” Uber’s lidar research work.

Levandowski agreed last month to step away from lidar work at Uber. But Alsup ordered him to return the stolen documents to Waymo, and he referred the case to criminal prosecutors.

The judge also rejected Waymo’s claim that Uber should be barred from working on lidar or any other specific technology. He says Waymo “over-reached” in defining its trade secrets.
